I first came to PATS Pilates classes about five years ago on the recommendation of my friend. I had recently retired and wanted to do something positive to alleviate stiffness in my back and keep my right knee as mobile as possible. It was a completely new venture for me but the kindness and skill of Emma and the other teachers and the friendliness of the class soon put me at my ease. I tried to do everything to the best of my ability and was amazed to feel more stable in a very short space of time. I realised I hunched my shoulders a lot and found it impossible to lie on my stomach because of the pain in my knee. (I was always given a similar but alternative exercise at this time.) After about a year Emma suggested I tried lying on my stomach and you can imagine my surprise when I realised that I was able to do this. My posture is so much better, I haven't had lower back pain for as long as I can remember and all my yearly assessments have shown the very great benefit I have received from coming to these classes. Finally I have been even more encouraged recently. This year my right knee has really become painful making my beloved walks only possible with strapping and pain killers. A spur of the moment decision to have a 1:1 session with Pat has revealed that the main problem may not be my knee but incorrect use of my foot. Pat gave me two simple exercises to do morning and night. It's still very early days but I have been on some walks with no pain, just stiffness. I still feel the need for strapping and pain killers on occasions but my love of being on foot in the countryside has expanded greatly in the last few weeks.
