Facing my fear of heights!
Published on: 31/05/17
This has been an interesting month of self-enquiry and discovery.
Friday 5 May was the PATS PILATES team gathering and we chose to spend our time together sharing a new experience.
The event was Go Ape - Tree Top adventures involving tackling high rope obstacles, leaping off Tarzan Swings, and gliding down zip-wires. My worst nightmare, as I have a fear of heights!
The day arrived and it was now or never to confront my fear.
In the past when confronted with various heights I have experienced symptoms of anxiety, a racing heart rate, sweating, shaking, and low level panic attacks. I also experienced fearful thoughts, such as “What if I fall?” or “What if I pass out?”.
I knew that I must confront my own fears by coming face to face with them. Somewhere in my subconscious I knew that handling my fear of heights would determine if I would be able to experience future adventures. I no longer wanted to be limited by the fear of heights.
Facing your fears can be powerful especially when you are in a situation long enough to learn that you can cope with it and that a catastrophe isn't likely to occur. I discovered that the key to facing a fear is to break the process into small steps, go slowly and be persistent.
After successfully completing the 6 challenging obstacles I found that I had gained in courage and confidence with each step I took. The team gave me strength in believing that I could succeed in each challenge.
I could not have completed the course without the team. They were instrumental in supporting, guiding and encouraging me. They rewarded me with hugs, smiles, tears and laughter. What an amazing experience, a fantastic day spent with the fabulous team who are my dear friends.
Thank you Anna, Helen, Ayse, Flavia, Leigh, Ruel and Emma. 😘
I believe I can take the next thing that comes along. I'm going to do the something I think I cannot do.
My fear of deep waters is something I would like conquer!
Oh no! There is talk of building a raft and going white water rafting ............
