Is Pilates Suitable for Seniors?

Pilates has benefits for all fitness levels and ages. At PATS PILATES we receive many enquiries asking whether Pilates is suitable for over 60’s – the answer is always YES!

The Pilates Method consists of a safe and effective repertoire both mat based and on the large apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates. The exercises help to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, balance and mental awareness.

“Pilates is perfect for older adults because it does not have the impact on the body that other forms of exercise do, and is not nearly as severe on the joints as most workouts are” says renowned Pilates Instructor and author Ellie Herman.

Increased control and stability is crucial for older adults as it can help to improve much of their functional movement, including balance, flexibility and posture which often deteriorates with age.

Pilates can help with a variety of age-related ailments:

  • Arthritis – the gentle movements maintain the range of mobility in the joints whilst decreasing the chance of joint compression.
  • Slow Effects of Diseases – it has been documented that Pilates can help to slow or reverse the effects of debilitating diseases like Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and can even help with brain traumas like strokes. The Pilates exercises increase mobility, build strength, co-ordination and body awareness whilst stimulating the function of the brain.
  • Osteoporosis – Pilates can increase bone density by working on weight-bearing exercises which may prevent Osteoporosis. If already diagnosed then a qualified instructor is equipped to prescribe suitable exercises to support the body to avoid injuries.
  • Back Pain – Through the Pilates Method the body alignment is corrected regaining the muscular balance and reducing or alleviating the pain and discomfort in joints and muscles.

Pilates is growing in popularity especially for older adults as it is an effective, safe and fun way to exercise. The ability to modify the repertoire to meet your needs ensures that Pilates is suitable and accessible for all. Many of the exercises are performed lying down or seated so there is less risk of falling.

Joseph Pilates once said “If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young”. Is it a myth or are you truly as young as your spine?

Find out for yourself by joining a Pilates class today! After all, Joseph Pilates practiced his method into his eighties.
